I love the atmosphere in this photograph. It has a special dark romantic quality to it that I think comes from the dark color combined with the velvety texture in focus. I really like how you have softened the focus on the stem as it goes down and I really like the soft faded colors in the background. It could have been a picture of decay and death, but because of the angle of the subject and the focus on the back of the bud and base of the stem, it takes on a less abrupt tone to it. It becomes more subtle and almost involuntary - as if a model were being extra modest or shy. I almost suggested cropping just the edge of the right side down a little more to place the head of the flower further into the upper right corner of the shot, but doing that would cut out some of the richer green in the background and that may lose some of the atmosphere in this photograph. I felt like your technique in this shot is close to perfection. The impact is quite strong with the colors. I can also see your vision in the shot, and how you must have been planning and executing. I imagine the photographer on her knees. <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/> Originality gets the least amount of stars simply because of the subject, however, it is still quite strong because it is much more common to shoot a healthy vibrant flower in its youth then one that has matured to this state. I think you pull it off very well, however. Many shots like this could become depressing and you seem to have found a charming beauty in a mature flower. Well done.
