And I'm Feeling Good - Art Share!

Journal Entry: Sat May 5, 2012, 2:31 PM

You know that feeling when you just sit back for a second and think Yeah, this is good. Life is good. I've had that everyday for so long now - but especially today. It's that relaxed weekend feeling too. I love it, I want to bottle it and sell it for millions!

I haven't had the time lately to explore the deviations of my watchers. So that's what this journal is for - share your newest piece of work here! Right here! Or down there, in the comments and answer me these questions:

1) How long have you been on deviantART?

2) What's your favourite Breakfast Cereal?

3) If you were a country, which country would you be?

1) This July will be my eighth year on deviantART. ^Kaz-D was the name I signed up with and kept since 2004!

2) My Favourite breakfast cereal has to be Golden Grahams - Yum! Cinnamon Grahams too!

3) If I was a country I think that I would be Papua New Guinea - a little bit discovered - a little bit unknown. A nice mix of both perhaps. ;)

"Surrealism is embedded in the everyday, in the daily experience." - Katharine Conley

This week the general theme of the article is Infrared Photography. You may know it well for its vision into a dream like world where the trees appear to be fluffy candyfloss and the grass is blue or Orange...Infrared is not as far away from achievable as you might think. This week some wonderful Deviants have shared their infrared views and art to try and help us understand the technique a little better. I rather thought it was time that the infrared community on deviantART had a bit more recognition too!

Contest!

To edge away from infrared (but only a little) this week I'm spotlighting my very own group! However really the credit goes to the wonderful team over there (which has just grown incredibly) who keep things ticking over and in general make it what it is. The group has folders for traditional, digital and photographical abstract and surreal works including a folder for Infared Photography.

Tip of the Week - How do they do it?

This week the tip comes from *MichiLauke who has been a huge asset to the world of infrared on deviantART. One of the biggest questions people have is how can I do that? Well Michael hopefully has some answers...

"If you have a Sony (or another camera model) with a "Night Shot Modus" you should buy a cheap Hongkong Infrared Filter of 950mm at eBay in the correct mm size of your lens and you can make even hand held b-w Infrared."

"If you want to make colorful Infrared Shots use a Hoya r72 filter and a good tripod and do some "quality" tests of your camera. Nikon cameras are the best for infrared shots with a Hoya r72 filter."

"Buy a converted camera for infrared shots. There are many cheap offers all around. They might not be new but are converted!  You can use these cameras like any other cameras. They just will produce Infrared Pictures. Find some IR Tutorials (see below) for color switch editing and your photos will be magic!"

One epic Journey needs your help

Journal Entry: Thu May 3, 2012, 10:13 AM

I rarely write to promote others efforts in raising money for charity. It's because there are so many out there, that to promote each time I come across one would be ongoing forevermore. However there is one particular cause that I would like to direct your attentions to today.

A friend from my college days is cycling unaided from Lands End to John o' Groats in June of this year. That's basically from the bottom of the UK, to the top. He's doing it for a very special charity based here in the UK called Naomi House. And why? Because in 2008 his newborn niece unfortunately died - but Naomi House were there to make her last few days as comfortable as possible. Naomi House provides respite to sick children with life limiting illnesses - and their families. It keeps a family together until the last possible moment.

I urge you today,  not to donate. It would be nice if you can, but that's not entirely why I am writing about this. But I urge you more than anything else to spread the word. Mark is undertaking the route alone, and so many of my watchers are in the UK up and down the country, he could do with support in June just as much as he could do with raising funds for Naomi House.

Right now there are 1,830 of you watching me on deviantART - Imagine the audience we could reach with this epic journey if even half of you shared the video.

If you do want to donate money - and are able to - it will be gratefully received I'm sure! Here is the Link

Thank You

Photography Weekly Header created by ~TouchedD

"It's not always easy to stand aside and be unable to do anything except record the sufferings around one. - Robert Capa"

The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos were announced this week and with it a debate was sparked about how best to display the controversial winners. The winning shot is Photo-journalism at it's best - and indeed humanity at its worst. The image depicts a young Afghan girl standing in the midst of the after effects of a bomb explosion. She is covered in blood, and around her lay bodies. Whilst the publication of graphic images has been a tough and much debated topic for some time - the very taking of such photos has sparked cynicism and unrest between many. Photo-journalists much of the time take their lives into their own hands when they document the horrors of this world and probably feel quite patriotic when they get the opportunity to shoot the rather more ordinary but amazing events that go on. What are your thoughts on the matter? Should War be documented publicly? Should images such as Massoud Hossaini's Afghan Explosion be shared? Discuss your opinions in the comments to this article!

Tip of the Week

This weeks technique comes from ~killythirsk who wrote an article a while ago about Lightpainting
"Lightpainting is a technique in photography by using low shutter speed and a moving light source. The light source is moved by a person or a device so you can acquire an artistic result."

There's also a fantastic ebook promoted in the article (sadly not free) but take a look if you're interested in light painting and night photography - Here!

“Creative slump - the Photographers equivalent of drought."

Every so often (and for many of us it feels like everyday sometimes!) we fall into a creative slump. It's not a place that the bubbliest most inspiring of people can rise us from. It's a horrible place, where you feel like you'll never be able to recoup that creativity again. But then something changes and you climb back out, you keep drawing, or fractal-ing or taking photographs and you're happy again.

It's funny how when we're creatively over flowing and positively genius's we rarely look back and remember the time when we couldn't envisage being artistic ever again. But equally when we're down and grasping at straws to try and pull ourselves out - we forget the achievements we've made, the times we succeeded. Perhaps it's time to remember both feelings - one extreme to another - maybe that will provide the little lift or equally the little bump back down to earth ;) that we need.

Tricks of the Trade

Courtesy of ^3wyl

From another photographer, to me, to everyone reading this particular
article, here is a trick you can try out with your DSLRs. I say DSLRs
because it will probably take a few tries before you get this the way
you want it to be.

You can make something static look more engaging and exciting by
shooting with a somewhat slow shutter speed and turning the zoom control
of your lens as you click on that button to take the shot.

So, effectively, two things are happening at once: pressing down the button to capture the shot and turning the zoom itself.

Obviously, you need to set your lens to do manual zoom, not auto zoom, and you actually have to have a zoom in the first place. :D

This will, hopefully, give the photo a bit of a dynamic feel to it.

Improving Your Photography - Every day we're filter-ing!

A year ago today for my 22nd Birthday I excitedly opened a package that was long, lens shaped, and fragile. But inside was a set of around 30 filters - the kind that thread onto the lens. So naturally joined together they appeared exactly like a lens! I was only disappointed for a few seconds though. Filters are an amazing addition to any photograph and if you can afford a set from Ebay or similar then I strongly urge you to invest and have a play.

Alternatively A lot of filtering can be done in Photoshop or other editing programs such as the examples below...

ScENeYmE

Mon Apr 16, 2012, 9:58 AM

The rather awesome `ScENeYmE has stepped down from General Photography - so she deserves all the love and thanks going for her time on the volunteer team. Jen came on board as the Urban And Rural CV shortly after I joined the team back in September of 2010 so she's been a pretty awesome long time serving volunteer. She became a mentor last year so has been uber extra awesome since then, if that's even possible. We've moaned together, fought over Daily Deviations together and just in general she's been there at the end of Skype (!) for me when I've needed it - so she deserves to be especially thanked for keeping ^Kaz-D sane.
We shall miss her greatly! In the meantime, she's not going anywhere so keep an eye on her on deviantART and if you have wordpress or email (everyone does have email right!!?) then sign up for her blog updates - [link]
Luff Choo Jen!

April - month of birth!

Sat Apr 14, 2012, 8:45 AM

Alive and Kicking!

It has been a while since I updated my journal with anything other than random stuff, Easter wishes and Photography Weekly! I got to grips with my inbox last night and sorted out the final few queries and DD suggestions that had been sent my way - keep them coming! I would love to see some of the other general photography galleries suggested to me - I'm getting a lot of people and portraits right now! Life is ticking over nicely, and this coming week will be my 23rd year of it! Twenty three feels an odd age to be turning, a sort of floundering I don't know what this age means kind of age. I don't gain anything, other than another year of life of course which is great! I don't even get to be classified as an older driver yet. Grump. Two more years! (Nobody wants to be classified as old but if it means the car insurance premium goes down then roll on OLDNESS).

All work and no play...

Work is crazy busy - we're a small team and the deputy manager just left and a new girl just started in one of the areas we cover, with another starting in a few weeks - so we're stretched a bit and it's all hands on deck for the training. I love it though - next month will see me finally confirmed in post which means pension kicks in, sickness is covered for up to two months and of course there is a tiny pay I rise! I started with the company back in August 2011 but a couple of months before being confirmed in post they had a restructure, and I effectively got a promotion. So everything reset itself and I had to start all over again.
Hopefully May 1st should see me a happy Kaz-D!

Photography...

Well, that's still ticking over nicely. I feel like lately I've worked on it a bit more as well which has been nice. This time last year I would take a few shots a week, if that. Now I take them daily thanks to the 365 Photography Challenge! If you're lacking inspiration and drive, I recommend you DO that challenge.

Easter Blues...

I spent Easter being unfortunately very ill. As some will have noticed from my photos, we're having work done to the house which is thankfully drawing to a close this coming week. But it has meant garage conversions, doors being cut, plastering, walls falling down, painting...dust...And me being me, I'm allergic to most of that! So my lungs filled up and stopped working properly. I was quite cross because it would have been my first holiday since December and I spent it moping around!

The End!

As for me, I'm studying hard, forever dusting my room, trying to get embarrassing photographs of Buddy and in general being me! I shall, hopefully in the near future, have a website launch to share with you all thanks to the rather wonderful ~TouchedD Watch this space..

“If life were a camera, I'd have the lens cap on.”
― Charles M. Schulz

I lacked the inspiration for any words for the article today, so I googled Photography under News and came up with something pretty amazing. Photography, it says, can be an ideal tool to give a voice to those who need it most, people on the margins of society, or who have little access to mass modes of outside communication. Photo-journalism goes some way to documenting those who can't document themselves, but how different would it be if they could do it? What would they photograph if they were stood behind the view finder looking forwards at their own lives? And equally - what would we photograph about ourselves?

PhotoVoice is a charity that was formed about ten years ago and is now well known for its commitment to training and developing the knowledge of those members of communities who are living through issue. The charity not only works on a world wide scale, but starts at home too. Home being for me, England. In London there are currently projects for the under 25s to explore the causes and consequences of gun crime and knife culture - through photography. Photovoice was something I didn't know existed - but now that it does, I think it's fantastic. You can read the Full Article Here!

“ Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst."
– Henri Cartier-Bresson

Lots of people quote the above at me when I start to moan that I've taken a billion photographs on a specific day and none of them turned out to be worth anything. The truth is you might take a thousand or you might take 4 photographs before you unearth something that's recognized, liked and respected. It doesn't matter either way because you're creating first and foremost for yourself. When you start to take money for your hobby is when you need to look at technique, skills and actual finished product to ensure that you are meeting the sort of quality criteria needed. So whilst the quote is a famous thought - provoking one - it isn't necessarily true!

With the Seventeenth edition of Photography weekly upon us I'd like to just emphasize that the support given is wonderful, the feedback is fantastic and the general stats on each article posted are mind blowing. I love seeing that spotlight deviants and groups get an increase in traffic - it means something must be working. But I rarely get anything from The Community in terms of promoting your work or others work, and getting your Photography related news out there. If you're unsure how to get involved check the end of this article for full details - and start noting me!

Photography Weekly: Edition Sixteen

Photography Weekly Header created by ~TouchedD

“Photoshop is just like makeup. When it’s done well it looks great, and when it’s overdone you look like a crazy asshole.”

Photoshop. You either love it, hate it or don't know because you can't afford it. As well as there being some fantastic tutorials out there to help you learn how to get the most from your work - I recently discovered Photoshop Actions.   There are plenty here on deviantART to help you enhance your work in the most intriguing of ways. I had an experiment this week and found that the results were just amazing. Browse PS Actions yourself here on deviantART and see what you can find. The actions are fairly straightforward to use. You just download it and then install it into your actions pane on Photoshop. Most of them have a mini tutorial attached to help with that. Let's see the results!

If you don't have access to Photoshop there are many free programs that can help you enhance you work. Picasa is a fairly basic but simple to use program from Google that enables you to bring your photographs in to personal albums and roughly edit them with the basics. Selective colouring is available although it's a bit rough around the edges - black and white, sepia, other effects and tone changes can be done with this program. If you want something a bit more advanced and akin to Photoshop on some levels then try out Gimp!

“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.”
― Margaret Atwood

In the UK Spring is most definitely here. And with it comes a plethora of Photo-graphical opportunities. Whilst there are the flowers, trees and in particular blossoms coming into bloom there are also the youngsters. Baby Animals! Birds beginning to nest and in general it seems - an influx of human babies too! There is no shortage of opportunities to take a photo at this time of year here and there are some useful tips to get you out and about making the most of the season...

Use sunrises and sunsets - the lightest part of the day at lunchtime and the dusky evenings to capture spring landscapes at their best. Utilize the foggy mornings with sun streaming through too! Avoid white light - at this time of year it's incredibly harsh and doesn't do much to enhance your photos. And also keep your tripod close to hand! When trying to get those intricate close up shots of leaves and petals, or a flower swaying in the breeze - you'll need some kind of camera support! This article from What Digital Camera explores more...

Community Relations News

Photography Weekly Edition Fourteen

"Take Only Photographs, Leave Only Footprints." - Urban Explorers Creed

Sometimes it's easy to forget the things around us that were once iconic and useful. In everyday life that could include a multitude of household objects, bits and bobs, clothes, gadgets - all sorts. But in Photography - a specific aspect of Photography - people close doors and board up buildings sometimes with little or no notice. They erect a fence around that old asylum and ship everything out or they install security guards at the boundaries of an army camp. Those places get forgotten and one day there will be nobody left that will remember them. That's where Urban Exploration comes in.

I'm not telling you to go out and scale the wall of your nearest derelict hospital in the name of photography. It takes a certain kind of person (and agility!) to do that anyway, but there are many depths to Urban Exploration some which are misunderstood or overlooked. You can get those shots without trespassing, breaking in, or doing damage. In fact one of the biggest rules of the urban explorer is as I quoted above - Take only photographs, leave only footprints. The idea is to capture for the sense of preservation.

A year or so ago I would never have dreamt that I would be wandering around an abandoned hospital with my camera, finding beauty in rotten decaying things. I never thought I would be crawling around in an abandoned army camp or standing on the edge of a cliff on the Isle of Wight taking photographs of a house that was falling into the sea. If you'd asked me a year ago, if I would even consider walking down a landslip with camera in tow - I'd have laughed. manically

The point is, lots of things are there for the shooting - you don't have to take risks or put yourself in danger to be an urban explorer . In Hampshire UK, where I live - many places are so accessible you can pull up in your car, jump out and shoot something amazing... At the bottom of this article you'll find some useful links to take you to urbex forums in your country (mostly) and some awesome resources!

Some of you might not be aware that you can suggest Urban Exploration pieces for Daily Deviations - send them to `fritsvandersloot You can also upload your own to the gallery found Here!

What would the soundtrack to your life be?

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 16, 2012, 6:00 AM
It's Saint Patricks day tomorrow which means lots of GREEN! In advance I want to wish everybody who celebrates it a wonderful day. I remember I was hosting a St Patricks Day party in a sheltered housing complex this time last year. It was fantastic :D

Also this...

The Awesome `AshleyxBrooke made this deviation!
I think mine would be this - because it starts off easy then gets complicated as hell. :D

"The quickest way to make money from Photography is to sell your camera"

Noticeably in the past few weeks, more and more people seem to be speaking up and making noise at the fact that aren't making money from their photography. There's no doubt about it - Photography starts out as a hobby. You don't one day pick up a camera and decide that you are going to be a pro and get given your first paycheck. It's one of those unique hobbies where you get a gentle introduction around age 10 with your first proper camera (haha) and the rest is History. Whatever you make it really.  You can't say that about most professions.

Putting yourself out there is something I've been trying to hammer home the past week, you'll have noticed my ramble if you read last weeks edition of Photography weekly. Getting paid for it is another matter. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Sometimes, you might not get paid for what you do. You can always wrangle something from a photo shoot be it a mention on a website, name spread by word of mouth, whatever. It doesn't always have to be money, getting known is far more important.

If you want to make fast money from Photography though - chances are your only option to begin with is to sell your camera ;)

Journal History

Come Away With Me

Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song

Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can't tempt us
With their lies

And I want to walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high
So won't you try to come

Come away with me and we'll kiss
On a mountaintop
Come away with me
And I'll never stop lovin' you

I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I'm safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me

-Norah Jones-

Once You Have Slept on an Island

If once you have slept on an island
You'll never quite be the same;
You may look as you looked the day before
And go by the same old name.

You may bustle about in street and shop,
You may sit at home and sew,
But you'll see blue water and wheeling gulls
Wherever your feet may go.

You may chat with the neighbors of this and that
And close to your fire keep
But you'll hear ship whistle and lighthouse bell
And tides beat through your sleep.

Oh, you won't know why, and you can't say how
Such a change upon you came,
But - once you've slept on an island
You'll never quite be the same.

Rachel Field
