Seasonal People + Portrait Contest Now Open!#PeopleAndPortraits has well and truly launched! In conjunction with that, we wanted to bring you a fantastic shiny new contest to see you through October.
We recognize that across the world people are entering all sorts of seasons right now...which is why this isn't just about Autumn. You can utilise any season you want - and if you're extra creative, how about combining all four into one image?




The idea of a Seasonal Portraiture Contest is for you to experiment and explore whatever season you happen to be in right now - through portraiture photography! The contest is open to all categories within the People and Portrait Photography Gallery:

Shoot Yourself: Self Portraiture Contest "Shoot" Yourself - A Self Portraiture Photography Contest
The idea is to get creative and move away from those myspace style self-portraits. Admit it, most of you did them - and fine tune your photographic skills by taking your own picture! Using technique that you possess, can learn from tutorials or may pick up this week, you need to take a shot of yourself as creatively as possible.

Photography Troubleshooting: Grouping PeopleWhen working with large groups of people, it's often incredibly difficult to know how to direct them, where to pose them, and indeed what to have them doing. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made when embarking on my first group shot at my first wedding as a photographer - was not speaking up when my assistant was shooting alongside me. The consequence? Half the group were looking at him, and half the group were looking at me. Luckily we straightened it out in the end - but when there are a lot of cameras around, or lots of people - you need to speak up and give direction so they can take direction.

Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing FireworksWith the 5th of November looming - and of course Christmas and New Year bringing the opportune moments for fireworks - it seemed useful to put together a small troubleshooting guide for those that are going to venture out with the camera. The 5th of November in the UK is known as Bonfire night - the day when, many years ago, the plot to blow up the houses of parliament was thwarted. Nowadays when officials discover a terrorist plot, they're pat on the back and life goes on. But back in those days, a  whole day was set aside for celebrating. Earlier this week I was stalking a photography forum (because it's where all the cool kids are) and I noticed somebody claiming to be a fairly professional photographer angling for information on the best mega-pixels D-SLR camera they could get in order to stabilise their images. Well anybody who knows even a tiny inkling about Photography will very quickly jump on that as most of us know full well that no matter how many megapixels you've got, they aren't worth a thing without a steady hand or more importantly a good sturdy tripod. I never was a firm believer in a tripod and even now, I rarely use it. However I use any number of things to stabilise myself when shooting whether that involves lying in a bed of flowers, resting against a wall or indeed using the nearest person (which I don't recommend - people sway!) Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy *Fuzzypiggy's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across *lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! Garden flowers go under APN unfortunately! They are more nature than still life. When it's cut and/or arranged it becomes still life :)
