Sometimes it's difficult to know where best to place your People & Portraiture Photography. Along with my fellow general photography CVs I've started to look into what defines the various People & Portraiture Galleries on deviantART - and we've noticed a real inconsistency with what photographers classify as emotive/spontaneous/self portraits and so on. Hopefully this weekly series of articles will help to change that, and challenge those of us who are unsure - to think outside the box when categorizing our work.

Spontaneous is a lot about capturing the moment without planning, so whilst a lot of the shots could be people looking away, last minute snaps or casual arrangements, it can also be a portrait where no effort goes into lighting, framing and set up
I understand Classical to mean something that is traditionally set up, the deviantART description suggests much like a painter would paint a traditional portrait. If you've seen titanic, think back to the pose that Kate Winslet took whilst she was being drawn (minus the naked bit as that would make it artistic nude) and often, the addition of vintage type clothing, tones or props enhances this.
Expressive and Emotive - I personally believe mean the same thing. Or at least very similar, but there is a definition there for them. I would coin it as emotional, really. It's photography that makes use of facial expressions and features to tell a story, smiling, crying, angry, sad and so on. Expressions/emotions.
Spontaneous is very much not set up - whilst it can be shots that are taken whilst people aren't looking directly at the camera, it can also be close ups of someone's face, so an unfinished or incomplete portrait in a sense, or works that are taken utilising natural light and nothing else, no air brushing, no fiddling with makeup and no lighting... maybe that makes a bit more sense?
