People & Portraits Exposed #3This week we're focusing on Spontaneous Portraits. The definition behind such portraiture is quite simple. It involves shots that are captured on the spur of the moment. They're not planned, they aren't set up, there could be things obscuring the models face, and there's often no time for makeup and lighting! But it's not simply the back of someone's head, or a funny face being pulled. Your work must also be artful in the sense that, it's clever, it stands out - and it's care free!

People & Portraits Exposed #1Sometimes it's difficult to know where best to place your People & Portraiture Photography. Along with my fellow general photography CVs I've started to look into what defines the various People & Portraiture Galleries on deviantART - and we've noticed a real inconsistency with what photographers classify as emotive/spontaneous/self portraits and so on. Hopefully this weekly series of articles will help to change that, and challenge those of us who are unsure - to think outside the box when categorizing our work.

People & Portraits Exposed #4 People, Portraits & The Olympics
The Olympics 2012 officially opens today in London and with it the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of moments are going to be captured across the next two weeks. Sports Photography can belong in several categories across deviantART and it's often difficult to know precisely which one. And guess what - I've got no real answers for you! My only tip is that you need to keep in mind that sports documentation is more likely to be Photo-Journalism than anything else. Unless your sports shots are posed to be creative, emotive and so on - they don't technically belong in the people and portraits galleries. Utilize Photo-journalism as much as you can over the coming weeks, whether you're at the Olympics or you're shooting some summer sports!

Jack Kirby

Jack Kirby was born Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28th, 1917 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. He was a comic book artist, writer, and editor; one of the most innovative and influential creators in the history of comics.
Growing up poor in New York City, Jacob Kurtzberg entered the newly emerging comics industry in the 1930s. He drew various comics features under different pen names, finally settling on Jack Kirby. In 1940, he and writer-editor Joe Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, predecessor of Marvel Comics. During the 1940s, Kirby, often collaborating with Simon, created numerous characters for that company and also for the company that would become DC Comics.

Kirby eventually found himself at Timely's 1950s incarnation, Atlas Comics, later to be known as Marvel Comics. There, in the 1960s, he and writer-editor Stan Lee co-created many o

As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.

Getting your Emotive on!

It's often quite difficult to define emotion in an image. However the Emotive People & Portraits Gallery is all about that. Whether or not you have captured emotion accidentally or on purpose - your work could have a place within the gallery.

Emotive puts a lot of thought and emphasis on the emotion captured in a shot which is quite obvious given the name. However it's not all about being able to see a face with extra focus on eyes, mouth and expression. Sometimes you can capture emotively without that focus.

So to create your emotive shots, your intention must be to delve into your subjects very soul and pull out the emotion through their posture, their expressions and their stance and surroundings to convey what is usually hidden away carefully.
