I recently spent some time (okay maybe hours!) exploring a photographic exhibition on the Isle of Wight - England. I had known that the exhibition existed for some years, but had never really ventured over there. It was held in the home and studio of a celebrated Victorian Photography - Julia Margaret Cameron. However it did include a nice variety of works - photographs from Dorothy Bohm who put together the book A world observed and a collection of shots taken at the famed 1970s Isle of Wight Pop Festival. It included images of Jimi Hendrix who performed at the festival just three weeks before his death. The images collated and exhibited were fascinating. But what really struck me was how far we had come in terms of camera equipment.

Urban Exploration #5 Urban Exploration: The Motives?
Back in November, Bradley Garrett discussed the motives and politics behind urban exploration at a talk in Brighton. The article afterwards opened up my eyes when I read it, whilst Bradley's views are strong and many disagree with them - he does have an underlying point. "We have a right to explore public infrastructure. Anything funded or maintained (or not maintained) by tax money belongs to us and we should be able to use it as we like as long as we don't permanently damage it or cause harm to the citizen body." If there is one vital thing that I have learned in my years as an amateur photographer - it's that to diversify and spread yourself amongst as many outlets, ideas and topics as possible is the best way to move forward and become successful. Photography doesn't begin or end with a Wedding. Nor does it start with a fashion shoot that pays you hundreds of pounds. Darkroom Exposed: Digital OverlaysDarkroom Exposed is a series of articles highlighting talented deviants, noteworthy art and helpful information all about the Photography > Darkroom gallery on dA.
This issue features digital overlays, which are created by layering two or more images (including but not limited to texture and colour layers) to create a final image, mimicking the effect of exposing photographic paper to two or more negatives and/or filters during printing. This differs from photomanipulations, where elements of numerous images are separately extracted and combined to make a final image.

When to use the Miscellaneous People & Portraits Gallery

This week we've put together an article that explores when to use the miscellaneous category within the People & Portraits Gallery . It's a tricky topic, but one that can quite easily be defined in many ways. Here we've got some examples that will hopefully help you understand what does fit in the miscellaneous portraiture gallery.

This piece by `IsacGoulart is a classic example of when it might be correct to use the miscellaneous category. This work could quite easily fit into a sky scape gallery or indeed water scapes within Animals, Plants and Nature. However in this case, the person in the shot is important and it's what makes this portraiture as well as anything else. But when looking at the sub-categories within the People & Portraits Gallery, there isn't really anything that it completely fits with.

When there is a lack of focus in your image, there is no clear cut emotion showcased or explored, and it doesn't follow something similar to the classics, it is likely that you could utilize the Miscellaneous category. The bonus to categorising your work properly is that you get more exposure if it's in the right place. Taking a few extra seconds on submitting to consider where your work should be, is honestly worth it. Plus when awarding Daily Deviations we make sure that anything we choose to feature is in the right category first - so getting it there yourself is worth the effort.

Remember that there are other gallery categories around. Your work might fit better into the Conceptual photography gallery. It could be Fashion photography or Pinup & Glamour. If a pet is featured and it takes up the majority of the frame it could be under Domesticated Animals. If you really are unsure, then please do get in touch with one of us and we'll do our best to help.

This week we're looking at how best to use the Miscellaneous People & Portraits Gallery here on deviantART. For many it's a place to put your work when you're clueless. For others it's genuinely a place that their work belongs. Whatever the reason, we're keen to help you and to educate in proper usage of the gallery.
