Firstly, it's hard to believe that this newsletter has been going for a year now! Huge thanks go to all those who regularly contribute their bits and pieces to make it a great edition each time its released. Additionally thank you so much for the feedback last week on the journal skin! Now, onto some Photography bits and pieces... There has been a lot of talk and much rejoicing from many across the community lately as more and more people find themselves publishing books, or co-publishing books. The methods have varied between Etsy and then other more generic and mainstream publishers, but the underlying idea is the same - getting your work out there. So I'm intrigued in finding out how people have gone about this, whether you've had a book published, or you're working on one - in particular Photo books.

Weather Photography has always fascinated me - the weather in general does anyway, but capturing those changes, shifts in atmosphere and so on have always had me in awe. However when browsing the latest news within popular photography early this week I was stunned by an image that NASA had captured of hurricane Isaac as it lurked over the USA. I've been in a hurricane before, but it never felt as organised or precise as this image shows. This shows a smooth beautiful cloud formation. When below it's likely wreaking havoc and destroying lives. It's difficult to match the two together and contemplate them as the same thing. It's also incredible how we've advanced in terms of technology. This shot of Hurricane Isaac was captured at the end of a month in which images have been transferred from Mars. We, as a human rac

I'm loving jars this month. I'm not sure why, other than the fact that I saw some set up at a craft fair that I had a table at, and I just fell in love with them. A couple of large jars with some fairy lights nestled in them - the effect was immense. It was so simple too! Sadly the people weren't actually selling the lights, but once I'd made a little profit on my sales, I went over clutching my ten pound note and picked out a few. So I was delighted to see that on Flipboard today, there was an article exploring 19 great photos of jars. If you're stuck for inspiration, grab a jam jar (take the jam out first maybe) and start shooting. Shoot things through them, around them, in them - get creative! Jars are awesome.

Since getting my first D-SLR, three years ago now, I have never been completely comfortable with the methods I use to transport it. With the camera came a bag, typical camera bag, over the shoulder type. But it's still not quite right. There are a wide range of camera bags out there now. Including one from deviantART - the dA Pro Camera Bag, but nothing has ever been quite what I need. The three common types of carrying a camera bag seem to be across the body, two straps on the back or even a belt. What do you use?

Have you studied Photography? I'm intrigued to know whether or not a qualification in Photography has made you a better, or indeed a worse photographer. Or has there been no change? I've been following UK Storm Chasers on facebook who have been documenting the arrival of the 'demon child of Nadine' as it has been deemed. Hurricane Nadine is still out there in the Atlantic Ocean spinning around and preparing to send the UK another demon child (which is really just a tropical storm to us) and with it comes a plethora of opportunities to snap some stunning skies and horizons. As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.

Gallery Makeover ProjectHello everyone

Recently my team and I worked tirelessly on a project to help improve the gallery descriptions and thumbnail examples. While that project was indeed tedious with almost 4,000 categories in our system, it was also educational. What I learned from sorting through thousands and thousands of categories was that we have a lot of redundancy and a lot of categories that seem to have been created on a whim that are now simply homes for junk.
Over the years, the desire to appease niche communities and people who just wanted a specific area has led to some categories that go up to 4 levels deep, and it's really no wonder it's so confusing for people to figure out where to submit their artwork.
The conclusion I've come to is simplicity. While I'm not about to rip apart everything and make 6 stand alone categories, I do believe that there is a lot we can do to simplify the category tree. That includes some of the following:

I wasn't particularly going to do a fortnightly 'This week in Photography History' when I wrote this article, but I had to mention what did happen, this week, in Photography History. Joe Rosenthal captured the iconic image of the American Flag being risen on Iwo Jima. What has been forgotten, mostly, is that the flag was actually raised twice. The second time it was captured on camera, and so it is the belief that this was the iconic moment from that second on. The first flag was actually photographed, but was too small! The flag was lifted and photographed just four days in to the battle at Iwo Jima. Rosenthal won the Pulitzer Prize that year (1945).

I think it's really important to look at History whilst we are all the time moving forward into the future. In particular, where Photography is concerned. It is so easy to bury ourselves in the simple, the 'easy' to achieve and to use shortcuts in the form of manipulation to achieve what we consider greatness. Don't get me wrong, those things are great. But sometimes, it's humbling and inspiring to look back at the rawness of Photography History, and the things that once were captured, with so little. Since the last newsletter, for the majority of our time on dA, a bunch of the Photography CVs and I have been working on bits and pieces behind the scenes. Hopefully now you'll see that when you submit a Photography deviation, the examples beside the description of each gallery are pretty spot on! We're looking towards the future months now. Whether we can bring you an officially awesome Photography contest to perhaps get you through the Summer - whether you see there's a use for a General Photography group here on deviantART..that sort of thing. We'd appreciate your thoughts greatly on that matter! Do we need a group base for General Photography? What sort of Contest would you like to see happening? Equally, we're keen for your thoughts and ideas on anything across the General Photography galleries. Feel free to ask/share!

The past few weeks, lots of different articles have been published for you. The most recent is General Photography CVs - what do we actually DO? In the last two weeks, ^arctoa has published his January & February Community Relations Newsletter and a Daily Deviation Report for February. Additionally, the March edition of his Abstract & Surreal Thumbshare is now live and is open for participation in two formats: the Regular Edition for everyone, and the Subscriber Edition for premium members.

His weekly feature journals continue at pace, with both the Friday Feature and Saturday Spotlight publications sporting several new editions.
