Photography Fortnightly #52

Fri Feb 1, 2013, 9:27 AM

“Since I’m inarticulate, I express myself with images.”- Helen Levitt

Firstly - new layout courtesy of StudioLoftMedia's Journal skin! What do you think? Easier to read? Harder? No change? Thoughts and feedback appreciated!

I suppose one of the most intriguing news stories the past few weeks has been the announcement by some Restaurants in the USA that they will be banning food Photography! Some claim that it's because of the flashes going off in restaurants and spoiling the mood for other customers. Others are angry that some professional photographers are making money or getting a name for themselves by sharing images of food that someone else has 'arranged.' And then there are the few that don't like the instagram snaps floating around that don't show their dishes in the best light. But what are your thoughts on the matter? One way of getting around the lack of being able to take a photo of your dinner is that some establishments are going to allow guests to photograph their food before it leaves the kitchen...discuss! Full article here.

General Photography

Community Volunteers Kaz-D + 3wyl

Firstly, the exciting news is that we now have a Conceptual Community Volunteer! Stepping into the awesome shoes that DemonMathiel left behind is astridle! So send your suggestions to her!

Check out the beautiful Tilt Shift Photography feature from dekorAdum. Have you tried tilt shift or explored the art here on dA? It's well worth a look! Adam has also put together a General Photography DD feature too. A member of our Photography community here on deviantART has had a book published. xMEGALOPOLISx has published a book of Photography - read more about that here. Also within the Photography galleries 3wyl has been busy as usual and has written
All snapped up! and To be seen. Both are articles featuring photographers here on deviantart! Our usual DD roundups have been published for the month. Check out  mine here and 3wyl's here.

Tutorials wise, we've brought a couple of troubleshooting articles to you the past few weeks. The first was particularly useful for those UK based deviants who experienced all the snow last week! Check out How to Photograph Snow for some hints and tips. Then we summarised this years (and a few of the latter part of last years) camera phone releases to see what's best for which. Check that out here. A final troubleshooting article that we released is also really useful and focuses on Capturing Landscapes.

Photography Resources

This one is costly (a little) this edition, but it's worth it if you want the sort of information that it offers you. It's an App called Focalware and is £2.99 currently on iTunes. If you want to know the exact position of the sun and moon at any location, any day, any time, then the focalware app is a fantastic solution. It helps with calculating the path and height of the sun and moon and allows you to determine where light and shadows will fall. Even if you don't need it for Photography, it's a pretty handy thing to geek out over!

Another resource with the anti-instagrammers of you out there will absolutely loathe, is Pixlr-o-matic for iphone. Thanks to DpressedSoul for bringing it to my attention! It boasts over 2 million combinations to make your photographs better, how can you NOT want it?! Check it out and have a play, share the results if you have some!

ScENeYmE is taking us Back to Basics with some excellent Photography based articles giving tips and information about the basics of composition.

Are the restaurants who are claiming that it's because of flash banning all photography or just banning people photographing the food? Because plenty of people take photos of their friends and so on that they're having dinner with. Everyone crowding round for a group photo, with one person standing up (in the way of the waiters) taking the same photo with five different cameras... that seems way more disruptive to me than someone in their seat quickly snapping a shot of their dinner before they eat it!

I read the article you linked to and one person said There’s no way you’re going to take a beautiful shot of food in a dimly-lit restaurant, which seems a valid point, and much more credible than the previous reason. The counter-argument would of course be that if ALL the photos of food are ugly, then it's not really very likely to put people off.

It's part flash, part secret stealing  I think  I think that's way more disruptive too! It's quite silly really.

Well yeah, it's not like I'll go in and set up my lighting, tripod and all sorts :B i admit that would be taking it a step too far perhaps :giggle:

I'm far too shy to ever consider taking food photography in public anyway.
If i was a chef I probably would not be happy about other people claiming credit kind of thing for their food in the form of photography after spending so much time and effort on it as most of the time the place of photography is not credited.

Looks like I did a pretty good job of writing my piece in the third person.

An excellent compendium of information, once again. The new layout looks good overall, although the blue clashes a little with the red in the headers.

As for restaurants banning people from taking photographs of their food, it's an inevitable act of suppression in the same vein that's seen photographers unable, legally, to photograph anywhere without express permission.

Journals should be easy to read, making text smaller just makes it harder to read!

I have a tendency to waffle on a little, so it's a case of infinite scolling vs. legibility.

Additionally, it's something I've always done and breaking habit like that is entirely against my mental make-up, which is probably the actual deep-rooted reason. Once I start with some sort of pattern or routine it's very difficult for me to break it.

First, a few more great things I noticed :) The font choice for the titles and body text are good, but not exceptionally unique. Maybe that's what you were going for, though: something people are used to seeing.

Also, the tags and comment tabs at the bottom are great, as well as the rounded corners. Those look very natural and aesthetically pleasing.

As one more thing (maybe this is a custom choice), there isn't a tab at the very bottom. Would it have replaced the title image in this case, and/or are these custom to the journal writer?
