I wasn't particularly going to do a fortnightly 'This week in Photography History' when I wrote this article, but I had to mention what did happen, this week, in Photography History. Joe Rosenthal captured the iconic image of the American Flag being risen on Iwo Jima. What has been forgotten, mostly, is that the flag was actually raised twice. The second time it was captured on camera, and so it is the belief that this was the iconic moment from that second on. The first flag was actually photographed, but was too small! The flag was lifted and photographed just four days in to the battle at Iwo Jima. Rosenthal won the Pulitzer Prize that year (1945).

Since getting my first D-SLR, three years ago now, I have never been completely comfortable with the methods I use to transport it. With the camera came a bag, typical camera bag, over the shoulder type. But it's still not quite right. There are a wide range of camera bags out there now. Including one from deviantART - the dA Pro Camera Bag, but nothing has ever been quite what I need. In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. The sky is so often underestimated in terms of Photography that I felt compelled to give it a bit of love and talk about it in this weeks article. I've been following UK Storm Chasers on facebook who have been documenting the arrival of the 'demon child of Nadine' as it has been deemed. Hurricane Nadine is still out there in the Atlantic Ocean spinning around and preparing to send the UK another demon child (which is really just a tropical storm to us) and with it comes a plethora of opportunities to snap some stunning skies and horizons. As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.

Perhaps quite fittingly, the title accompanying the image on the front page is Lessons from the storm. Whilst many have learned a lot from Hurricane Sandy and many more are working on rebuilding their lives, one of the biggest lessons for photographers and the world of media could well be that iphone Photographers can be photo-journalists too. Darkroom Exposed: Digital OverlaysDarkroom Exposed is a series of articles highlighting talented deviants, noteworthy art and helpful information all about the Photography > Darkroom gallery on dA.
This issue features digital overlays, which are created by layering two or more images (including but not limited to texture and colour layers) to create a final image, mimicking the effect of exposing photographic paper to two or more negatives and/or filters during printing. This differs from photomanipulations, where elements of numerous images are separately extracted and combined to make a final image.

Firstly, it's hard to believe that this newsletter has been going for a year now! Huge thanks go to all those who regularly contribute their bits and pieces to make it a great edition each time its released. Additionally thank you so much for the feedback last week on the journal skin! Now, onto some Photography bits and pieces... There has been a lot of talk and much rejoicing from many across the community lately as more and more people find themselves publishing books, or co-publishing books. The methods have varied between Etsy and then other more generic and mainstream publishers, but the underlying idea is the same - getting your work out there. So I'm intrigued in finding out how people have gone about this, whether you've had a book published, or you're working on one - in particular Photo books.

One of the other interesting photography related things that I've been musing about this week links to an article published by the guardian recently. Lincoln's Face was made for Photography. It got me thinking, what kind of face makes a photograph? What are the most photo-genic faces? Do you find that beauty makes them the best, or is that something more secretive, in-obvious and underlying? Are you able to see beauty in anything? Those who have seen the movie 'Lincoln' will have seen Daniel Day Lewis and his fantastic performance - does he have the same photogenic gene that Lincoln apparently carried? I personally think that any face can be beautiful, whether captured in the right or wrong way, but some (even many!) will disagree with me!

Over the past few weeks, much has been going on within the General Photography Galleries. We've worked on our usual articles and some behind the scenes bits and pieces, but mostly our focus is to continue bringing those under-appreciated or un-known artists to your inbox's by whatever means possible. And not only that, but we're also working on exposing the galleries that are less appreciated than others. Places like Transportation, Fireworks and Urban Exploration - where work often gets swamped by mis-cats (works submitted to the wrong place). `dekorAdum has put together a 'skylines' feature this week which you can view here. And ^3wyl has exposed yet another artist within the Photography gallery which you can read about here. We've looked at ISO in Photography Troubleshooting and there are lots of handy tips to be found here.

Community Relations News

We've said goodbye to `ChewedKandi recently who looked after the Vector Galleries and recently had her own book published by Adobe! There are some Write in Chat Events hosted by `thorns to participate in and the first Devious Hunt has launched! Since our last newsletter, ^arctoa's February Forum Thumbshare for Abstract & Surreal art is now live and the regular edition can be found here, while the subscriber edition is here - feel free to take part! Janauary's thumbshare has been wrapped up with Issue 010 of his Friday Feature series, and continues as normal with featuring recent discovers in Issue 011. Finally, his Saturday Spotlight feature sports two new editions: Volume 010 with ~KingaagniK, and Volume 011 with *augenweide.

Around the groups, #non-real has released Randomized News 4.5, an extensive feature looking at abstract patterns. #Abstract-and-Surreal's February Contest is now online along with the results of January's edition.
