Art History

Photography month is well and truly underway, but if you want to contribute and haven't signed up yet, there's still time! Just note the group. It has launched with an article letting you know what's going on who is who within the Photography CV team, check that out here. Additionally a brief History of Photography has also been shared and an article exploring the first of a series of Famous Photographs is out! Stop by the group for lots more going on this month.

Abstract + Surreal Photography

Community Volunteer arctoa

There are many areas of art here on deviantART that spark controversy and unrest between members of the community. For the majority, it is the fact that they cannot understand what makes a piece special or what a certain genre means, that causes them to get antsy. Remember that not everything is to your taste. There are lots of ways in which you can explore and learn about the galleries here on dA - consider stopping by ArtHistoryProject and checking out the historical facts about Photography this month. The Monthly Feature is out from WhoNeedsColour and shares many monochromatic works set to inspire! Within the Abstract + Surreal Community arctoa has been hard at work with various features and goings on. There's a Preview Feature of a truly fantastic artist, a Pinboard of current events and Last months daily deviation report. Don't forget to send your Abstract and Surreal Daily Deviation suggestions his way! There are some truly inspiring abstract works being featured from the gallery at the moment.

Architecture Photography

Community Volunteer AnaNaszynska

Architecture has featured widely in the news the past few days with a fantastic headline, If you build it, they will come (and copy it). In China, the race is on between two identical buildings to see who will finish first. Dame Zaha began her plans in August 2011, but someone else has come along, swooped in and is replicating her work in South-West China! The article is a great example of how we live in a world that's ever changing, and ever developing. And proof that even off of the canvas/camera or page in a book, works can be copied. Check out AnaNaszynska's DD roundup for December 2012.

Animals, Plants and Nature

Community Volunteer IsacGoulart

Yesterday on facebook, I spied a post from a wonderful Photographer who I found on deviantART some time ago sharing the fact that his work had been selected by National Geographic. You may have seen it on the most popular page the past few days. Huge congratulations to Zoran Milutinovic aka ZoranPhoto for his wonderful achievement with this shot!
Also within the APN community this month, IsacGoulart has shared the Top 21 DDs of 2012 in two parts. You can check out Part One + Part Two respectively!

Artistic Nude + Fetish Photography

Community Volunteer Nyx-Valentine

This week in Photography History, Alfred Stieglitz was born. (Back in 1864!) He was a legendary Photographer, but not only known for his talents behind the camera - he also helped solidify photography into an accepted art form, in particular - artistic nude. And where did he begin with his nude photography? None other than Georgia O'Keeffe. There's some trivia for a pub quiz! So some of the beginnings of Art Nude Photography came from quite a unique relationship between two creative people. It's quite inspiring when you think about it. In keeping with the diverse theme, Nyx-Valentine has Celebrated Diversity again!

Darkroom Photography

Community Volunteer EveryNextDream

An interesting article this week looks at the transformation from using traditional old style cameras and techniques, into having simply an ipad as a means of a 'darkroom.' You can read the full article here. It brings to the fore, the debate of what is truly the best way and whether actually - we could perhaps live in harmony with both forms of developing our Art - and embrace modern technology..? EveryNextDream has also been Celebrating Diversity recently and has additionally rounded up the Darkroom DDs for last month.

Fashion Photography

Community Volunteer Pixel-Spotlight

A swimming pool may indeed sound like a strange place to have a fashion shoot - although if you've seen SachaKalis's work here on deviantART it might not surprise you...but Catherine Laura, a fashion photographer, earned herself a Clothes Show Live award for her innovative ideas. A scuba diver and photographer combined, it perhaps was natural that she put the two together for her art. The results though, are truly beautiful. Check them out for yourself here.

Horror, Macabre + Cosplay Photography

Community Volunteer pullingcandy

RAW Photographer of the year winner, Eric Honeycutt, is an artist that's well worth checking out. His work is dark, macabre and has that 'out of this world' element that so many struggle to capture. Check it out if you're looking for an inspirational macabre fix - right here. Don't forget to keep sending your Horror, Macabre and Cosplay suggestions to pullingcandy!

Photo-Journalism Photography

Community Volunteer xbastex

Keep an eye on ArtHistoryProject this month as it's Photography month, and within that we'll be exploring some famous - journalistic - shots from the years. Already, an article has gone up looking into the Afghan Girl. xbastex has rounded up the December Daily Deviations for Photo-journalism and posted them here.

Pin-Up + Glamour Photography

Community Volunteer DistortedSmile

This article from Huntington News sums up Vintage glamour photography perfectly and gives a wonderful oversight into where it all came from. If you're intrigued at all, especially by war time influence, then it's definitely an article for you.
DistortedSmile has rounded up the December Pinup + Glamour Daily Deviations which you can view right here.

People + Portraits Photography

Community Volunteers Kaz-D + 3wyl

We've begun our monthly challenges over at PeopleAndPortraits - check out the latest one here. We also had a Portraits Exposed Christmas Special and next week will be starting up regular Portraits Exposed blogs again, so if you want to be included, note me!

Still Life Photography

Community Volunteers 3wyl + Kaz-D

Fix that Miscat! is a brand new series of articles that helps determine the difference between sometimes tricky galleries. The first in the series looked at the Culinary Arts section of Artisan Crafts in comparison to the Food Photography section of Still Life Photography. Check it out if you're confused - it might help! In honour of Christmas, Nom Nom was Christmas Themed last week! Check it out for some delicious Christmas focused food! Now that Christmas is well and truly over, you should have more time, so why not think about taking on the Food Photography challenge this month? It's the perfect recipe of Wintery Spice Cake and you've got until 31st of January to make it! On the subject of food, check out maytel's monthly food challenge!

Urban + Rural Photography

Community Volunteers 3wyl + Kaz-D

There's a brand new feature out dedicated completely to Urban Exploration! I thought it was time that the rather underappreciated and misunderstood genre had a bit more attention and love. So Urbex was born! If you'd like to see your work in there, or know somebody that should be featured please drop me a note!

Photography Resources

Lens Hero is a real life saver when it comes to figuring out what lens you need for your camera. Have a look at it, put your camera make and model in and what you're looking to achieve and a budget - and it will suggest something for you! It's fantastic. (And quite expensive when you add the lens costs up!)

Photography Books

I got a fantastic book for Christmas, so I'm actually able to say with complete conviction, this is a great book! It's for those who like a mix of Photography and a little bit of Psychology added in. In fact, it's the perfect book for me! Check out The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman, you won't be disappointed!

Weekly Features to keep an eye on!

There's so much going on around the community especially for Volunteers that sometimes the awesome news can be missed out. I hope to share any weekly or monthly features that are ongoing here so that you can browse them at your leisure. If you know of something that needs to be listed let me know!
