"No photographer is as good as the simplest camera."
~Edward Steichen

Since getting my first D-SLR, three years ago now, I have never been completely comfortable with the methods I use to transport it. With the camera came a bag, typical camera bag, over the shoulder type. But it's still not quite right. There are a wide range of camera bags out there now. Including one from deviantART - the dA Pro Camera Bag, but nothing has ever been quite what I need. The three common types of carrying a camera bag seem to be across the body, two straps on the back or even a belt. What do you use?

Is it snowing where you are? Check out the snow tutorial that I got to put into practice today - Photography Troubleshooting - Capturing Snow. Much of the UK has been blanketed in the stuff which provides ample opportunity to get creative..!

Spotlight Deviant BokehLight

This week the spotlight deviant was suggested by MarcosRodriguez who says, "He has only been here for 5 months but he has showed a great talent for photography, I specially like his macro shots." There is definitely a surrealistic and almost abstract feel to BokehLight's work as he takes ordinary objects and shows them at a different angle and viewpoint.

Spotlight Group Monotonicity

Monotonicity's tagline is See the world in unicolour and the gallery of the group is full of colour, in fact it's well worth checking out just for the beauty of the layouts. The galleries are divided into colour sections and showcase some beautiful works. Head over now!

Architecture Photography

Community Volunteer AnaNaszynska

This week I stumbled across an amazing example of how trick photography (i.e. manipulation) can completely blow your mind. The article was actually sold to me straight away with the line "Architectural Photography that breaks your brain." The work of Filip Dujardin is just that. His creations are teetering on the edge of believeable, but they're tricks. See for yourself...

Animals, Plants and Nature

Community Volunteer IsacGoulart

justeline is a deviant to check out if you're looking for some incredibly inspiring Nature Photography. She was the Digital Camera Photographer of the year in the Gardens and Plants category with this wonderful piece...

She also has a book out called Lightscapes which you can find more information about here.

Check out the Regular and Subscriber Editions of the Thumbshare and Feedback Threads and share your work!

Don't forget that over at Abstract-and-Surreal the monthly contest is still in full swing. You can participate by checking out the article here. In other groups, there's a new initiative at non-real to get people to start making DD suggestions via the group. Check that out here. And in 4bstr4ct4rt they are promoting a physical exhibition that seeks to inform people about abstraction! More info here.

Macro photography

Thank you very much for mentioning WNC's monthly feature.

Btw, I'm using a Lowepro Slingshot [link] and I find it most practicable cause you don't have to take it off every time you want to switch lenses or filters.

Hey, here is my camera bag, it's not a "pro" one but it's perfect for me and I should say it's the only one that fits exactly to what I need so far : [link]
It's not too big and it can carry a standard DSLR cam with at most 3 lenses + some little accessories. It's perfect also on a bicycle and you can turn it easily from back to front and get your camera in the hand quickly or even change lens ...... I really recommend it :D
... and it does exist in several colors : [link] [link]
.. and even it's one of the cheapest I found ;)
For the rest, all great news and links ;)

Oh that's actually really neat! Nice and compact too and I love the shape. The only problem for me is across body bags, I wear them all my life practically and thus now (even at the age of 23) I get incredible neck pain using them just on one shoulder! :(
Pierre-Lagarde Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013
Well, I haven't got the problem with that one, perhaps because the stripe is quite large and comfortable and also because the bag is not very big (so not that heavily loadable)... or perhaps it's because I use it on my bicycle and my back is not straight up that way. Don't know, maybe a combination of all that... for the age I should suffer twice as you are anyway so...

Maybe I just carry heavy things too often :P And don't cycle :D

I agree, I've never came across a bag that really met my needs. I don't even know what my needs actually are, but I think I'll know it when I see it. Some sort of one-shoulder messenger bag might be good for me, but to have any sort of adequate padding it would need to be rather bulky and I imagine it would get in the way. As of now I just use an ancient backpack that has been cheaply retrofitted with some foam and a towel, heh; 'cause you can never be without your towel!

It's far from ideal, though. I do have a hand-grip-strap on my camera, which is extremely useful. I don't like the trailing nature of the strap that comes with cameras so having a hand-strap, camcorder-style, means that I can walk around fairly undisturbed and fairly safely with the camera safely attached to my hand.

Finally, thank-you for including Abstract & Surreal happenings in the article!
Kaz-D Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
It's frustrating! Sometimes. ;) Maybe the ancient concotions are the best. You might be onto something there you never know...

You're very welcome :) thanks for compiling them together for me. Most useful!
arctoa Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Student Photographer
I probably should've picked up the dApro back when it was le-cheap-cheap last month; it seems it's by far the best you can get on a tight budget. Most camera bags of any note are bloody expensive, especially when they're not really what I am looking for.
Kaz-D Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
My Dad has the dA Pro, it's not for me but for sure it's an awesome bag
iAmoret Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
I just use this random camera bag that was on the opposite wall at Wal-mart, so, I don't really have any advice for ya there. But all mine has is a handle on the top- no straps- so it's difficult to carry. Thankfully the camera itself has straps, because that's really the important part. :D

It is most definitely snowing where I am! :faint: I went out this morning to capture it, but all of the pretty snow that had been on the multitude of evergreen trees around my house had disappeared! :saddummy: Also, it was only about 5 degrees outside, so I was freezing to death. :iconitscoldplz: There was one point where, since my gloves restricted me from pressing the capture button on my camera, my bare finger got so numb that when it came time for me to capture the shot of a blue jay I was waiting for, I couldn't move my finger to press the button! :iconitsfreezingplz:

Amazing feature! Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go check out some of those contests. :plotting:
Kaz-D Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2013  Hobbyist Photographer
:D but sometimes those unique finds are the best! :D

That is cold! I know it wasn't that cold outside today, but obviously stepping in the snow it was! :< That's awful :o I experienced that kind of cold today on my fingers, painful cold, I didn't know what to do :O

Thank you! Enjoy the contests ;)
