"Is Photography Art?

This week the Guardian asks Is Photography Art? Now this is an interesting question and I already know my stance on it, Photography, to me - IS art. It can't not be art. It's creation, creativity, capturing, preserving - but it's Art. I'd be interested to see who agrees with this and who would say no to the Guardian's question - and why. So let's get thinking about it and debate it in the comments on this article...One commenter on the Guardian Article said the following..."Photography is definitely not art. In my opinion it's something way more beautiful and profound."

I think what and how something is captured by photography is art, or the idea and aesthetics behind it. Anyone can point their camera or camera phone and take a picture. That's evident by the millions of shitty Instagram photos the sorority girls on my Facebook feed post every day. It's an eye for the aesthetics of a picture that makes a photographic artist: good combinations of colors, quality lighting, purposeful/intentional use of camera controls, and meaningful composition.

Photography is the same as any art, really. For example, just as anyone can take a picture, anyone can draw one. Some people draw stick figures, others draw photo-realistic portraits. Same goes for photography. Some people just point and shoot at a group of friends, apply an Instagram filter, and call it a day; others make studio-quality portraits with compelling composition and lighting.

So in summary: just because anyone can press a button on a camera doesn't mean photography isn't art. It's what you do with a camera that matters.
