The Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos were announced this week and with it a debate was sparked about how best to display the controversial winners. The winning shot is Photo-journalism at it's best - and indeed humanity at its worst. The image depicts a young Afghan girl standing in the midst of the after effects of a bomb explosion. She is covered in blood, and around her lay bodies. Whilst the publication of graphic images has been a tough and much debated topic for some time - the very taking of such photos has sparked cynicism and unrest between many. Lots of people quote the above at me when I start to moan that I've taken a billion photographs on a specific day and none of them turned out to be worth anything. The truth is you might take a thousand or you might take 4 photographs before you unearth something that's recognized, liked and respected. It doesn't matter either way because you're creating first and foremost for yourself. When you start to take money for your hobby is when you need to look at technique, skills and actual finished product to ensure that you are meeting the sort of quality criteria needed. So whilst the quote is a famous thought - provoking one - it isn't necessarily true!

Every so often (and for many of us it feels like everyday sometimes!) we fall into a creative slump. It's not a place that the bubbliest most inspiring of people can rise us from. It's a horrible place, where you feel like you'll never be able to recoup that creativity again. But then something changes and you climb back out, you keep drawing, or fractal-ing or taking photographs and you're happy again.
It's funny how when we're creatively over flowing and positively genius's we rarely look back and remember the time when we couldn't envisage being artistic ever again. But equally when we're down and grasping at straws to try and pull ourselves out - we forget the achievements we've made, the times we succeeded. Perhaps it's time to remember both feelings - one extreme to another - maybe that will provide the little lift or equally the littl

This week Horacio Coppola died. Many will not know the name, but in the Photography world he was pretty awesome. He died age 105, and was famous for taking Black and White photographs of Buenos Aires in the 1930s. But he also photographed normality. Some of his works included egg and twine - quite simply an egg and a piece of twine. Others featured a typewriter, but ultimately he shot normality, the everyday things that people overlooked. He's said to be one of very few photographers who manage to capture the romance, vitality and squalor of a great city. So a legend has died, but somewhere another will rise up through the ranks. Who inspires you? Which historical Artists have provoked you to reach the place where you are now? Or who you aspire to be?

I lacked the inspiration for any words for the article today, so I googled Photography under News and came up with something pretty amazing. Photography, it says, can be an ideal tool to give a voice to those who need it most, people on the margins of society, or who have little access to mass modes of outside communication. Photo-journalism goes some way to documenting those who can't document themselves, but how different would it be if they could do it? This week I spied an awesome topic in *Fuzzypiggy's journal and knew instantly that it was what I would talk about for edition twenty eight. In the UK Spring is most definitely here. And with it comes a plethora of Photo-graphical opportunities. Whilst there are the flowers, trees and in particular blossoms coming into bloom there are also the youngsters. Baby Animals! Birds beginning to nest and in general it seems - an influx of human babies too! There is no shortage of opportunities to take a photo at this time of year here and there are some useful tips to get you out and about making the most of the season...
Use sunrises and sunsets - the lightest part of the day at lunchtime and the dusky evenings to capture spring landscapes at their best. Utilize the foggy mornings with sun streaming through too! Two editions of What Digital Camera appeared today and I'm pretty glad they did because I flicked through and immediately landed on a link for a free online Photography magazine. You can open it up yourself Right Here and I haven't tested but I believe it works in all countries. The reason I'm sharing it is because they have a nifty forum where you can share your own photography with the chance of them picking it to publish either in the online magazine or the 'real' shop versions. I recently spent some time (okay maybe hours!) exploring a photographic exhibition on the Isle of Wight - England. I had known that the exhibition existed for some years, but had never really ventured over there. It was held in the home and studio of a celebrated Victorian Photography - Julia Margaret Cameron. However it did include a nice variety of works - photographs from Dorothy Bohm who put together the book A world observed and a collection of shots taken at the famed 1970s Isle of Wight Pop Festival. It included images of Jimi Hendrix who performed at the festival just three weeks before his death. The images collated and exhibited were fascinating. But what really struck me was how far we had come in terms of camera equipment.

Earlier this week I was stalking a photography forum (because it's where all the cool kids are) and I noticed somebody claiming to be a fairly professional photographer angling for information on the best mega-pixels D-SLR camera they could get in order to stabilise their images. Well anybody who knows even a tiny inkling about Photography will very quickly jump on that as most of us know full well that no matter how many megapixels you've got, they aren't worth a thing without a steady hand or more importantly a good sturdy tripod. I never was a firm believer in a tripod and even now, I rarely use it. However I use any number of things to stabilise myself when shooting whether that involves lying in a bed of flowers, resting against a wall or indeed using the nearest person (which I don't recommend - people sway!) Weather Photography has always fascinated me - the weather in general does anyway, but capturing those changes, shifts in atmosphere and so on have always had me in awe. However when browsing the latest news within popular photography early this week I was stunned by an image that NASA had captured of hurricane Isaac as it lurked over the USA. I've been in a hurricane before, but it never felt as organised or precise as this image shows. This shows a smooth beautiful cloud formation. When below it's likely wreaking havoc and destroying lives. It's difficult to match the two together and contemplate them as the same thing. Sometimes it's easy to forget the things around us that were once iconic and useful. In everyday life that could include a multitude of household objects, bits and bobs, clothes, gadgets - all sorts. But in Photography - a specific aspect of Photography - people close doors and board up buildings sometimes with little or no notice. They erect a fence around that old asylum and ship everything out or they install security guards at the boundaries of an army camp. Photoshop. You either love it, hate it or don't know because you can't afford it. As well as there being some fantastic tutorials out there to help you learn how to get the most from your work - I recently discovered Photoshop Actions. There are plenty here on deviantART to help you enhance your work in the most intriguing of ways. I had an experiment this week and found that the results were just amazing. Browse PS Actions yourself here on deviantART and see what you can find. The actions are fairly straightforward to use. You just download it and then install it into your actions pane on Photoshop. Most of them have a mini tutorial attached to help with that. Let's see the results!

If you don't have access to Photoshop there are many free programs that can help you enhance you work. Picasa is a fairly basic but simple to use program from Google that enables you to bring your photographs in to personal albums and roughly edit them with the basics. Selective colouring is available although it's a bit rough around the edges - black and white, sepia, other effects and tone changes can be done with this program. If you want something a bit more advanced and akin to Photoshop on some levels then try out Gimp!
