Photography Weekly: Edition Thirty

Thu Jul 5, 2012, 12:26 AM

Photography Weekly Header created by TouchedD

"A photograph says that you were so important, I stopped everything else to come and preserve you."

This week Horacio Coppola died. Many will not know the name, but in the Photography world he was pretty awesome. He died age 105, and was famous for taking Black and White photographs of Buenos Aires in the 1930s. But he also photographed normality. Some of his works included egg and twine - quite simply an egg and a piece of twine. Others featured a typewriter, but ultimately he shot normality, the everyday things that people overlooked. He's said to be one of very few photographers who manage to capture the romance, vitality and squalor of a great city. So a legend has died, but somewhere another will rise up through the ranks. Who inspires you? Which historical Artists have provoked you to reach the place where you are now? Or who you aspire to be?

I don't really follow or even know of many famous photographers. But while in my high school photography class, one of the assignments was to do a report on one, so I picked Sally Mann.

She does pretty awesome photography, but what caught my attention was the photos of her children. You can view them here [link] But be warned, some of her photos contain nudity.

Photographing people or doing portraits is something I've never been really good at. Or rather, I never have the balls to ask to photograph people, so that's always been a weak point of mine. And the way she captures moods and the flowing style of her portraits always really stood out to me.

Oh wow, thanks for sharing her work - it's incredible. I love the tones too. Something about black and white

Yeah  I love black and white, but her stuff, specifically, always blows me away.

Have you seen *lauren-rabbit's work? Surreal black and white for the majority - perfect combinations!

Oh wow, quite amazing. Thanks for the tip—I'm going to watch her.
Kaz-D Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2012  Hobbyist Photographer
I spied her in black and white photography magazine. I guess you probably don't get that where you are, but if you do or you find something similar, it's seriously worth the investment
