Weather Photography has always fascinated me - the weather in general does anyway, but capturing those changes, shifts in atmosphere and so on have always had me in awe. However when browsing the latest news within popular photography early this week I was stunned by an image that NASA had captured of hurricane Isaac as it lurked over the USA. I've been in a hurricane before, but it never felt as organised or precise as this image shows. This shows a smooth beautiful cloud formation. When below it's likely wreaking havoc and destroying lives. It's difficult to match the two together and contemplate them as the same thing. One of the more recent articles on the topic of photography explores how an instagram photograph taken during Hurricane Sandy has been selected to be used on the cover of Time Magazine. Perhaps quite fittingly, the title accompanying the image on the front page is Lessons from the storm. Whilst many have learned a lot from Hurricane Sandy and many more are working on rebuilding their lives, one of the biggest lessons for photographers and the world of media could well be that iphone Photographers can be photo-journalists too. We've covered the topic of equipment, capabilities and qualifications many a time before now in Photography Weekly - but what are your thoughts on this article?

I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. The sky is so often underestimated in terms of Photography that I felt compelled to give it a bit of love and talk about it in this weeks article. I've been following UK Storm Chasers on facebook who have been documenting the arrival of the 'demon child of Nadine' as it has been deemed. Hurricane Nadine is still out there in the Atlantic Ocean spinning around and preparing to send the UK another demon child (which is really just a tropical storm to us) and with it comes a plethora of opportunities to snap some stunning skies and horizons. As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.

Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy *Fuzzypiggy's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across *lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

I recently spent some time (okay maybe hours!) exploring a photographic exhibition on the Isle of Wight - England. I had known that the exhibition existed for some years, but had never really ventured over there. It was held in the home and studio of a celebrated Victorian Photography - Julia Margaret Cameron. However it did include a nice variety of works - photographs from Dorothy Bohm who put together the book A world observed and a collection of shots taken at the famed 1970s Isle of Wight Pop Festival. It included images of Jimi Hendrix who performed at the festival just three weeks before his death. The images collated and exhibited were fascinating. But what really struck me was how far we had come in terms of camera equipment.

Facebook has today changed its Terms of Service to allow Instagram to use your photographs pretty much for whatever it wants, whether that's advertising to sell or more. It's important that you, on an individual level, decide whether this is something that you want to have your work involved with or whether you stop using the service and move on to something else with a much more fairer Terms of Service. Regardless, be aware that things have changed. You can read more about that here. There are rumours that the TOS has now been changed again- but they are unconfirmed.

Earlier this week I was stalking a photography forum (because it's where all the cool kids are) and I noticed somebody claiming to be a fairly professional photographer angling for information on the best mega-pixels D-SLR camera they could get in order to stabilise their images. Well anybody who knows even a tiny inkling about Photography will very quickly jump on that as most of us know full well that no matter how many megapixels you've got, they aren't worth a thing without a steady hand or more importantly a good sturdy tripod. I never was a firm believer in a tripod and even now, I rarely use it. However I use any number of things to stabilise myself when shooting whether that involves lying in a bed of flowers, resting against a wall or indeed using the nearest person (which I don't recommend - people sway!) However it's not difficult to get

Recently I started a forum post asking members of the community where they began with Photography. Specifically I asked what your first camera was and what provoked an interest in the hobby. Because for nearly everybody that's exactly how it begins. The response was incredible, however one reply in particular touched me. *JaredWingate permitted me to share so here we go...

she said to me "You Need A New Hobby" she went out and bought me an
Olympus 5mp. Which was mind-blowingly awesome for 2001... She then
suggested I take a trip down town (kansas city missouri) and shoot what
catches my eye... Well what happened to catch my eye was the homeless
people... I paid each homeless person I spoke to 5$ and gave them a
sandwich to have them tell me their story & let me photograph them.

I'd love to continue the discussion here, this week, in what prompted you to begin photography and what made you immerse yourself in Art. For me, I was tired of seeing awful things. I decided I wanted to capture beauty as much as possible. Looking through the viewfinder showed me a world that I could easily become part of compared to the difficult times I was living through as a child. It worked too, eventually photography took over. I live and breathe it now!

Spotlight Deviant

It was not a difficult decision to choose to spotlight *JaredWingate this week. As well as inspiring with the roots behind his photography developing, he also has a pretty varied and intriguing gallery. *JaredWingate caught my eye when somebody suggested his work for a Daily Deviation sometime ago and his work spans many genres of photography.

I was given my first camera when I was 5 and was taken to Disney land by my Aunt. We left from Texas and I felt it was my job to show my family everything I was seeing. My parents were not too supportive and so I did not touch a camera again until college and those were cheap throw aways. I took tons of shots of the sky and nature and of course friends partying. When I married my husband knew I had always wanted to do photography, so for our first year anniversary he got me a cannon rebel film camera in 2005. I was glad to learn on film, it taught me to slow down, and really think about what I was doing. I didn't want to waste film I wanted to get my money's worth when I got a role done.

Now with digital I feel so free and spoiled. I have since gone into business, selling prints and cards and covering weddings. It really is a dream come true in many ways.
