I recently spent some time (okay maybe hours!) exploring a photographic exhibition on the Isle of Wight - England. I had known that the exhibition existed for some years, but had never really ventured over there. It was held in the home and studio of a celebrated Victorian Photography - Julia Margaret Cameron. However it did include a nice variety of works - photographs from Dorothy Bohm who put together the book A world observed and a collection of shots taken at the famed 1970s Isle of Wight Pop Festival. It included images of Jimi Hendrix who performed at the festival just three weeks before his death. The images collated and exhibited were fascinating. But what really struck me was how far we had come in terms of camera equipment.

I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.

Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy *Fuzzypiggy's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across *lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

This week the general theme of the article is Infrared Photography. You may know it well for its vision into a dream like world where the trees appear to be fluffy candyfloss and the grass is blue or Orange...Infrared is not as far away from achievable as you might think. This week some wonderful Deviants have shared their infrared views and art to try and help us understand the technique a little better. I rather thought it was time that the infrared community on deviantART had a bit more recognition too!

This week I spied an awesome topic in *Fuzzypiggy's journal and knew instantly that it was what I would talk about for edition twenty eight. Lilly McElroy throws herself at men in the name of Photography. That is quite literally, what she does. And when I stumbled across the article this week I was tickled to read more into her project and the profoundness behind it all. Lilly initially started out on Craigslist, trying to find men to throw herself at but unfortunately she didn't get much response. In the end she went public, approaching men in pubs and clubs to try and recreate that social situation where so many throw themselves at strangers with such ease (and often with not much grace).

The other week, a piece of my writing was selected for a Daily Literature Deviation. If you're curious you can see the article here. I was humbled by that, but my reason for mentioning it in Photography Bi-weekly is that *0hgravity then highlighted a website to me that I found absolutely fascinating. I'm loving jars this month. I'm not sure why, other than the fact that I saw some set up at a craft fair that I had a table at, and I just fell in love with them. A couple of large jars with some fairy lights nestled in them - the effect was immense. It was so simple too! Sadly the people weren't actually selling the lights, but once I'd made a little profit on my sales, I went over clutching my ten pound note and picked out a few. So I was delighted to see that on Flipboard today, there was an article exploring 19 great photos of jars. If you're stuck for inspiration, grab a jam jar (take the jam out first maybe) and start shooting. Shoot things through them, around them, in them - get creative! Jars are awesome.

Weather Photography has always fascinated me - the weather in general does anyway, but capturing those changes, shifts in atmosphere and so on have always had me in awe. However when browsing the latest news within popular photography early this week I was stunned by an image that NASA had captured of hurricane Isaac as it lurked over the USA. I've been in a hurricane before, but it never felt as organised or precise as this image shows. This shows a smooth beautiful cloud formation. When below it's likely wreaking havoc and destroying lives. It's difficult to match the two together and contemplate them as the same thing. I don't know about you, but Light Painting has to be really unique and awesome in order to impress me. So when I stumbled across the work of Darren Pearson aka Darren Twin - I was astounded at the creativity and simple methods used to create his conceptual photographic pieces. Darren creates LED pictures of Skeletons Skateboarding, dancing and living - exploring what the Mail Online has termed as the bare bones of our daily lives. And it really is precisely that. Darren takes the ordinary, the mundane and the normal of everyday life and lights it up by night by painting bones. Check it out for yourself. " What's the most obscure subject you have been asked to photograph?"

If there is one vital thing that I have learned in my years as an amateur photographer - it's that to diversify and spread yourself amongst as many outlets, ideas and topics as possible is the best way to move forward and become successful. Photography doesn't begin or end with a Wedding. Nor does it start with a fashion shoot that pays you hundreds of pounds. There are so many niches and gaps in between that people overlook as lesser known and inadequate - but that can be one of the strongest rungs on the ladder to success. (See what I did there?) It's coming to the end of a week where I've stretched myself
photographically, more so than usual, and I'm more than happy to share what I have learned in order to help out those who want to step up with their work. Last week I was recruited by an image company as a
photographer documenting insurance claims. You know the kind, car smash, house fire, property damage e.t.c It wasn't something I ever would have considered myself doing, mostly because I didn't think that
the role existed. Of course, it's part time, pretty much ad hoc and the pay whilst good, is not sustainable for a full time position. But it's something - something completely different and outside of the box!

Getting yourself known is one thing, but putting yourself out there in terms of being adventurous and tackling the more obscure is another. I invite you to give it a go, if you haven't already. Your local council
might want images for something, a local artist might need product shots. A local butcher may want some promotional abattoir shots. (It's happened to me before!) The list is endless and can get more obscure the
more you delve into it.

I'm very pleased to say that this article has now very much become a combined effort. All Photography CVs regularly contribute, but ^3wyl `IsacGoulart and myself are now combining forces to bring you as much fresh material and happenings as possible. So how can you get involved?

^3wyl will soon be starting a photography featured of under-appreciated deviants. It would be great if you feel your photography is under-appreciated or you know of somebody who deserves more exposure - to drop by the forum here and leave a comment. There are requirements - less than 10,000 page views on your profile - but head over to the forum and get more info there.

There's a useful article out that explores the ten best photography books (not that they are biased) and whilst some are a little outside of the normal price range (£650 for Marilyn and Me!) there are a couple of useful gems there.
