This week I happened across a Photographer who shoots the economy - currently in the UK. If you ever wondered what Economy looks like - and what the recession looks like - in the Photographic sense then wonder no more. Simon Robert's has it captured. What really struck me though, aside from the complete normality and sometimes mundane life that made the photographs, was the comments on the Article that I read about Simon. The BBC Wrote about him yesterday and nearly all the comments were from people advocating boredom. The Irony is that Simon Robert's had, in full colour, photographed our lives. And the general consensus was that it was dull and unimaginative. How very English we are.

I recently spent some time (okay maybe hours!) exploring a photographic exhibition on the Isle of Wight - England. I had known that the exhibition existed for some years, but had never really ventured over there. It was held in the home and studio of a celebrated Victorian Photography - Julia Margaret Cameron. However it did include a nice variety of works - photographs from Dorothy Bohm who put together the book A world observed and a collection of shots taken at the famed 1970s Isle of Wight Pop Festival. It included images of Jimi Hendrix who performed at the festival just three weeks before his death. The images collated and exhibited were fascinating. But what really struck me was how far we had come in terms of camera equipment.

This week the general theme of the article is Infrared Photography. You may know it well for its vision into a dream like world where the trees appear to be fluffy candyfloss and the grass is blue or Orange...Infrared is not as far away from achievable as you might think. This week some wonderful Deviants have shared their infrared views and art to try and help us understand the technique a little better. I rather thought it was time that the infrared community on deviantART had a bit more recognition too!

This week I spied an awesome topic in *Fuzzypiggy's journal and knew instantly that it was what I would talk about for edition twenty eight. This week Horacio Coppola died. Many will not know the name, but in the Photography world he was pretty awesome. He died age 105, and was famous for taking Black and White photographs of Buenos Aires in the 1930s. But he also photographed normality. Some of his works included egg and twine - quite simply an egg and a piece of twine. Others featured a typewriter, but ultimately he shot normality, the everyday things that people overlooked. He's said to be one of very few photographers who manage to capture the romance, vitality and squalor of a great city. So a legend has died, but somewhere another will rise up through the ranks. Who inspires you? Which historical Artists have provoked you to reach the place where you are now? Or who you aspire to be?

Lots of people quote the above at me when I start to moan that I've taken a billion photographs on a specific day and none of them turned out to be worth anything. The truth is you might take a thousand or you might take 4 photographs before you unearth something that's recognized, liked and respected. It doesn't matter either way because you're creating first and foremost for yourself. When you start to take money for your hobby is when you need to look at technique, skills and actual finished product to ensure that you are meeting the sort of quality criteria needed. So whilst the quote is a famous thought - provoking one - it isn't necessarily true!

Every so often (and for many of us it feels like everyday sometimes!) we fall into a creative slump. It's not a place that the bubbliest most inspiring of people can rise us from. It's a horrible place, where you feel like you'll never be able to recoup that creativity again. But then something changes and you climb back out, you keep drawing, or fractal-ing or taking photographs and you're happy again.
It's funny how when we're creatively over flowing and positively genius's we rarely look back and remember the time when we couldn't envisage being artistic ever again. But equally when we're down and grasping at straws to try and pull ourselves out - we forget the achievements we've made, the times we succeeded. Research carried out by Nikon has estimated that an amazing 332 million jubilee related photos will be taken on the day of the Thamas River Pageant on June 3rd. That's amazing. It even tops the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton last year. The upcoming Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth has sparked patriotism in the most unlikely places meaning that driving down a normal street turns into an epic photo opportunity with the various bunting, flags and other bits and pieces. Lilly McElroy throws herself at men in the name of Photography. That is quite literally, what she does. And when I stumbled across the article this week I was tickled to read more into her project and the profoundness behind it all. Lilly initially started out on Craigslist, trying to find men to throw herself at but unfortunately she didn't get much response. In the end she went public, approaching men in pubs and clubs to try and recreate that social situation where so many throw themselves at strangers with such ease (and often with not much grace).

I lacked the inspiration for any words for the article today, so I googled Photography under News and came up with something pretty amazing. Photography, it says, can be an ideal tool to give a voice to those who need it most, people on the margins of society, or who have little access to mass modes of outside communication. Photo-journalism goes some way to documenting those who can't document themselves, but how different would it be if they could do it? What would they photograph if they were stood behind the view finder looking forwards at their own lives? And equally - what would we photograph about ourselves?

I must say browsing through the gallery on an almost daily basis to check the entries had me feeling incredibly hungry! Tip of the Week


When photographing modern architecture you can get away with using a much more modern, abstract style. Experiment with wide angle lenses to produce extreme perspective, or photograph the building from unusual angles. Also, because modern buildings are often squeezed in very close to one another, you can crop in tightly on the building without making the photo feel unnatural.
