"The places where one could be both mad...and safe."

Abandoned Hospitals and Asylums are one of the most popular sites amongst Urban Explorers and whilst we don't get the same variety of choice in the UK as Americans might do, we do have a fair share of interesting forgotten locations. But in the USA, from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, over 250 institutions for the 'insane' were built. These places housed over half a million patients... Imagine the secrets the remaining walls hold! The reason for the now abandonment of these once thriving hives of activity was the move towards more community based care, more developed medications and of course, stricter laws.

Urban Exploration is the exploration of man-made structures. Usually these are abandoned ruins, or components that used to be part of everyday life but are no longer seen on a regular basis by the human eye. This series of articles aims to highlight exactly what Urban Exploration is, how it's achieved and the some of the best Urbex Photographers here on deviantART. I've always been so interested in asylums back in the day, so I loved this!

I don't know why but I love to see abandoned buildings. Too bad that there aren't any like this near me. :)

Great feature as always.

if you look carefully you can find alot of abandoned buildings in the uk, but you have to move away from cities to find them

Very beautiful work. Seems to tell of a deep dark secret within the place.

Very intrigued by your editing of the photos. That is my weak point when it comes to photography. As I know one shouldn't rely on a program to make the photo, but these photos leave me stunned.

COOL ! I could swear I've seen some of those photos in one of those obscure escape games from SelfDefiant. I love the style, but I wouldn't know where to get started to look for such a place in my area

This place [link] was within easy biking distance to me, but as of 2010 or so, it was demolished and bought by Toyota for something or other.

It's a damn shame, since I took a ride out to the location in 2011 or so to try and get some photos, but it was inhabited by the Toyota dudes. So, let that be a lesson; be sure to get pics of good urban exploration places before they go all tearing down. That also happened in another place, not 5 miles from this place, that I had luckily got pictures from. Went a second time, and they were bull dozing the place.

That's such a shame. I do think that sometimes they have to put these derelict lands to good use, or they get abused. But the fact that all that History goes with them is sad. :(

Yeah. Just wish I had gotten there before it was demolished. But oh well, that's part of the game isn't it?
